Citizenship Information Section

This profile section collects information about your citizenship status and birthplace.  Citizenship is an important factor in federal financial aid eligibility, and is required by Coalition colleges.  If you are not a citizen, you may still be eligible for federal financial aid if you are a U.S. permanent resident or are granted refugee status by the U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services.

U.S. Citizen or U.S. National – Select whether you are a U.S. Citizen or U.S. National.  A U.S. Citizen is someone who was born or naturalized in the United States.  A U.S. National includes natives of American Samoa or Swains Island.  If you answered ‘yes’ to this question, a second area will be displayed in which you can indicate whether you are a U.S. Dual Citizen and for which countries.

If you answer no, an optional document upload for your green card will appear.

Are you a U.S. Permanent Resident or Refugee?  If you are not a U.S. Citizen or U.S. National, you are asked a question about whether you are a U.S. Permanent Resident or Refugee. If you answer yes to this question, two additional fields appear.

A U.S. Permanent Resident has been granted authorization to live and work in the United States on a permanent basis, and holds a green card (Form I-551, I-151 or I-551C) as proof. A Refugee has been issued an Arrival and Departure Record (I-94) by the U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services.

If you answer no, Do you Hold a Current U.S. Visa? will appear, selecting yes displays two new fields for your visa type and expiration date of your current status.

Answering No displays Have You Been Approved to Receive DACA Status? and answering Yes to that displays Expiration Date of DACA Status. To learn more about DACA read our Help Desk article here

Birthplace – choose your country of birth from the drop-down list.  This information is important so that the colleges to which you apply know more about you and your background.
